What is Levitra?
LEVITRA® is a medicine used to treat Erectile Dysfunction, a condition when you cannot get or maintain an erection sufficient enough to have sexual intercourse with your partner. It was approved in 2003 and became the second drug on the US market for the treatment of ED.
Levitra belongs to a group of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. The active substance is vardenafil hydrochloride.
Prescription Levitra
Levitra is available in a form of orange round-shaped film-coated tablets in strengths of 5 milligrams, 10 milligrams and 20 milligrams. The drug available by prescription only.
Levitra not included into the insurance cover. This means that you have to pay the full cost for this drug.
How it works?
Levitra (vardenafil) inhibits a particular enzyme in the body, called phosphodiesterase type 5. This leads to an increase in blood flow to the penis, so that the erectile tissue can be filled with blood. If you then get sexually excited, it can be easier to achieve erection, with the efficient blood flow into the erectile tissue.
Unlike such ED treatments as Caverject and Bondil, you get no effect of Levitra without sexual stimulation.
The drug starts working within 15-20 minutes after intake. The possibility of getting an erection when you are sexually stimulated persists usually for up to five hours after having taken the tablet.
How to take Levitra?
One should take a single tablet half an hour to an hour before sexual intercourse. If the tablet is taken with a fat meal, it may take a little longer before the medicine starts to work. The regular tablet can be taken with some water.
One should not drink grapefruit juice while you use Levitra. This may affect drug efficacy.
Dosage
It is important to follow the instructions for dosage on the label on the medicine package. Then you get the best results of treatment while reducing the risk of side effects.
A standard dose of Levitra is 1 one tablet of 10 milligrams taken half an hour to an hour before sexual intercourse. The dose may need to be increased to 20 mg or decreased to 5 milligrams, according to response. One should not take more than one dose a day.

Important
Levitra may not be combined with so-called nitrates that are used to relieve angina. There is a risk of excessive hypotension, which can trigger an angina attack or a heart attack.
Because the drug stays in your body, it is dangerous to use nitrates for a time after you have used Levitra. If you experience chest pain during or after intercourse you should not use nitrates, but you should immediately contact a physician.
It is also very dangerous to combine Levitra with amyl nitrite. The effect may be the same as for nitrates, that the patient may suffer an angina attack or a heart attack. Amyl nitrite is originally a heart medication but is no longer used. It happens that amyl nitrite is used as a drug, known as poppers.
You should not use Levitra if you have a medical condition in which you should avoid sexual activity, such as a severe heart disease.
You should not use Levitra if you have severe liver problems or severe renal impairment requiring dialysis.
If you get side effects such as dizziness or vision changes, driving a car should be avoided.
If you are taking other medications
If you are prescribed to different drugs at the same time, there is a risk that they interact each other.
Thus, you should always make sure that it not dangerous to take LEVITRA with other medicines, herbal remedies or herbal medicines simultaneously.
You can ask your doctor or a pharmacist about it.
You should certainly not combine Levitra with:
- nitrates such as glyceryl trinitrate
- ketoconazole or itraconazole, which are antifungal medicines
- HIV protease inhibitors, such as medicines containing ritonavir.
One should not use Levitra simultaneously with other medications for Erectile Dysfunction (VIAGRA, CIALIS).
